When hunting for mushrooms it is extremely important to identify them correctly. All mushrooms I find except for agaricus, cordyceps and hericium species get sent away for genetic testing to ensure the species is safe to eat. I have trained dogs in the past for other purposes and am using my knowledge to train a new member of my family Max a chocolate Labrador to hunt for mushrooms for me. I have already got him searching for field mushrooms at a local park as practice and even at 18 weeks he finds the whole exercise extremely fun for him and myself. He can cover a much larger area faster and is more accurately than I can, he even picks up a scent of mycelium even when the mushrooms are not fruiting.
